“Infestation: G.I. Joe” issue 1 hit stands last week. I’ve never been a particular fan of G.I. Joe. Nothing wrong with it, just not my cup of tea. Having said that, I will say that the artwork was nice and the story was somewhat interesting, and I am curious to see what happens next week. However, I cannot honestly say if this story really captures the style and characterization of the franchise.

The threat to the G.I. Joe universe is once again from the artillica, which is a natural fit given the weapons and technology used by both the Joes and the Cobras. As an animal lover, I’m not entirely thrilled with the fact that the artillica chose the lab animals to turn into attack bots, but it makes for a good story device, and from what little I know of G.I. Joe, animal experiments are something that one would expect from Cobra.

I've Got A Webcomic, Now How Do I Get Revenue?

Alright, so you've got yourself a Webcomic. The two C's are flowing (Content and Creativity) and you're feeling the love back from your daily/weekly audience. Hmm how awesome would it be to take your creative gem and make a lil $money$ off of it, you know, as a part-time gig...or even more!

The easiest way you can start pulling in money from your Webcomic is to run ads. In this blog, I'll give some tips I've picked up that helps you maximize your ad capabilities without losing your audience.

The first thing you want to realize is which ad types work best on your site. Most Webcomic sites use leaderboards, banners, skyscrapers and half banners. Before you start grabbing these types of banners to put on your pages, you should consider having two or three designated areas for ads. These places should be near the top of the page that receives the most "views" by your audience. The next best place is somewhere along the side.

Now, what types of ad companies should you register with to host your ads with?

Project Wonderful
Among Webcomics, Project Wonderful seems to be the most popular. I recommend it for all to use as it's not only a way to get revenue, but it has an easy method for you to redistribute your revenue into their advertising network so you can do a little promotion of yourself at the same time.

Signing up is very simple. In order to run ads on your site, you need to have at least 30 original posts on your site as either comic updates, or with substantial content if you have just blogs/news. If that's the case for you, sign up and apply for your site to have ad boxes (to gain revenue from ad boxes). If not, get yourself more updates by either updating your comic more, or updating with daily blogs between the comic updates.

With Project Wonderful, you can choose to accept "G" rated ads, PG-13 or Not Safe For Work ads; clarify which theme of ads you are open to accepting by giving keywords (like comic, geek, gaming, movies, etc.); choose to approve all ads before they run, or a less hands-on approach to running ads. A drawback for adult comic-ers is that you cannot run Project Wonderful ads on a site designated as porn.

Depositing and Withdrawing money is used through PayPal.com, so you should have an account. It's very simple and quick to request withdrawals and get money fast with ProjectWonderful.com.

Adbrite

I highly suggest getting yourself and ad box or two from AdBrite.com. Their system runs similar to Google Adsense. Although as a person who has an Google Adsense account, I can tell you I've generated much more from my AdBrite account than Google Adsense. By the time I generated $15 from Google, I'd already made $113 from AdBrite just by running a full banner ad and skyscraper ad.

With AdBrite, you don't have to worry about coloring your ad space beyond what is shown when no ads are running. Also, I've never had it where no ad runs in my ad space(s) regardless of my traffic amount, except for the first 2 or 3 days when the system is getting my traffic stats and entering my stats in their ad network to get bidders. Unlike Project Wonderful, I can also specify if I want my ad space to show a full-page ad after "a specified set of pageviews" to give me another way of generating more revenue.

With AdBrite, you can begin running advertising ASAP. Just sign up, select which type of ads you want to run, specify your display preferences and place the code on your site.

AdBrite also is a network for you to reinvest your advertising dollars to put your banners on Websites and promote yourself, as is ProjectWonderful. The difference is Adbrite consists of a much larger network of options to choose from.

If you have an adult theme, then you want to use the adult-oriented branch of AdBrite called Black Label Ads. It's the same network, and actually your account is linked to your AdBrite account, so you can see both stats in the same screen. Best of all, it's the same registration and set up as AdBrite.

Payment with AdBrite is different that Project Wonderful. You are given a 60-day lead time for your ads to pull in money from the advertiser and be applied to your account. You're also sent checks via mail starting 60 days from when you register your account. You're also given a minimum that your checks must be for a check to be sent. Once the first check is sent, and your account remains over the minimum, you'll be sent checks monthly.

The drawback to AdBrite is that you're paid on a pay-per-click method, which means if a person clicks on an ad on your site then you get paid for it. Most advertisements start out for low trafficked Websites at $0.05 per click.

Comparison
If you're looking for a solid way to only accrue revenue from advertising, regardless of what your Webcomic theme is, I suggest AdBrite (and/or BlackLabelAds.com for adult themes). You have all the same types of advertising used from other Ad Networks, and you can option to use even more ways to advertise.

Which of the two can pull more money? For Websites with less than 10,000 pageviews a day, I've tested that AdBrite pulls in more money a day over Project Wonderful. If you're pulling in a solid 10,000 pageviews a day or more, Project Wonderful will give you more bang for your buck.

If you're not worried about how much you will generate because you're more worried about what types of ads will be displayed, then I can only put out two suggestions:

1. Project Wonderful has a huge network of Webcomics. Some people may argue that putting an ad up on a Webcomic site that advertises another Webcomic isn't good business tactics because you're advertising your competitor. Most people who surf the net these days have a short attention span, so if they come to your site and like what they see in your content, they'll more than likely come back. But, if they see an ad that is "shiny and new," or just plain appealing, then they are off of your Webcomic site and over to another. Now you've run the chance of them not remembering your Webcomic because their attention is taken elsewhere.

Project Wonderful does have advertisers that are not Webcomic related, such as geek sites, news/blogs, and dating sites. However, the majority are Webcomics. If the many Webcomics that will advertise are not issues for your advertising acceptance rules you put out for your brand, then Project WOnderful is looking good!

2. Adbrite runs ad content relating to cars, dating, tv shows (like American Idol), book stores (like Borders), movies, text ads and more. So if you prefer a higher amount of ad themes to choose from, and probably less of your Webcomic competitors, when accepting ads, AdBrite is more up your alley.

This fall, Warner Bros is releasing a classic Roddenberry pilot. Two actually. Genesis II and Planet Earth. I'm releaved to know that the studio hasn't forgotten about the classic pilots that never made it to series. Personally, I think they are testing the waters to see how many scifi fans will pick up the pilots. If there's enough, I'd think there will be a series to come in 2010 or 2011.

Synopsis:

Planet Earth is a sequel to Gene Roddenberry's Genesis II (1973) made-for-TV movie, in which a NASA scientist, Dylan Hunt, is revived from suspended animation in the post-nuclear war United States. In Planet Earth, Dylan is now a sworn member of PAX, the colony of people who revived him. Dylan and his PAX team find another colony which is ruled by women and where all men are slaves. He is captured and sold as a slave, but escapes and organizes a rebellion. Dylan once again has a profound influence in the new world that he finds himself in, in the year 2233.

Holy crap! Came across a buzz called TRIPPING THE RIFT, a sexy-made-for-adults animation from DMAX and I instantly had to check this out. Apparently it was shown in America on the SciFi channel a few years back. It has two seasons on its back and now is sprouting in Germany.

The show is done by the same crew that brought us "The Simpsons." Hold on there...this animation is MUCH better in quality that Simpsons animation. I won't talk too much on quality, because (honestly) who watches this show for animation quality? The only reason any 18+ dude (and probably a few chicks) will stay up late is to check out the ever bouncing boobs on the main character Six (voiced by Carmen Electra).

HOT! and even though I've missed the boat on checking it out on SciFi channel, I've included a full episode below for viewing. I guess the new formatting of SyFy (pronounced sifie) doesn't allow it to compete with Adult Swim.

Interesting story I just read at teh LA Times between Google & Microsoft battling over who will become the email service for the City Hall of Los Angeles. After reading through, it gives the ease of use of Google vs the long-term history of Microsoft. Interestingly enough, at some point it's stated that schools follow suit of other cities. If it's that much of a major following, why not offer a free year or so of service for this one location? I'm sure that would drop the price down dramatically. Also, if it's such a great service, and there's a free incentive, I'm sure that would save a city, and college, a good chunk they can then use towards other services like education materials, housing, etc. The economic crisis for education facilities hasn't gone away. This move would be a way to let the school know that the "tech giant" is caring for the city & education system's well being as well as it's tech service. Referrals go a looong way, I'm sure.

First post is a wonderfully funny set of vids I've noticed on the Web recently. It amazes me what today's news media is able to get away with around the world. Have we gone off the deep end by combining hardcore news facts and exotic models? I mean really? I like to look at any attractive person, but while I'm watching the news?
